A man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a 42-year-old in Launceston.
William Craig Simmons, 27, appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Thursday over the incident on Tompsons Lane in Newnham the day before.
Detective Acting-Inspector Jason Jones said Simmons allegedly stabbed Benjamin Shay Hosking once in the chest with a folding knife.
He said the incident occurred at a home on the street, where Hosking was visiting a woman.
Police will allege Simmons arrived at the house and stabbed the victim after becoming involved in an altercation, Jones said.
The men were known to each other and were also known to police.
Court records indicate the pair have previously served time behind bars for various offences.
Simmons did not enter a plea during his brief court appearance and was remanded in custody.
He will reappear in court on September 23.
