Suspected gas leak shuts down busy William Street in Devonport

A hazardous material incident on a Devonport street has shut down the nearby area this morning.

Emergency Services were called to a reported gas leak on William Street shortly after 6am on Tuesday.

“Until the source/location of the gas leak has been identified William Street will be closed between the intersections of Valley Road and Charles Street,” authorities said.

“Exposure to this material may present a danger.”

While there is “no risk of exposure to the general public at this time”, motorists and pedestrians have been told to avoid the area until further notice.

“If you are in the immediate area, stay indoors, close all doors, windows and vents and turn air conditioners to recirculate or off.”

“Non-residents should stay away from the affected areas.”

Updated 7:15am, Thursday April 23: Authorities say the scene has been contained and residents can return to the area.
