Woman arrested after ‘violent assault’ on French tourists in Hobart park

A woman has been taken into custody after she allegedly assaulted several people in Hobart’s St David’s Park this afternoon.

Police were called to the area around 3:50pm on Tuesday after receiving reports of an assault.

An eyewitness told Pulse the woman, understood to be living in a tent in the park, came “storming out” and “ran over to a group of French tourists” who were lying on the ground.

“She grabbed one by the hair and tried to kick him in the head,” the witness alleged.

“Then another tent person came over and took her toward the Supreme Courthouse, she then punched a woman to the ground and took off into Salamanca.”

The witness said they called the police and helped the woman who had been knocked to the ground.

“The tent lady then started walking back through the park threatening people, so I got her attention … as I moved toward the police.”

The witness said the woman followed him, unaware the police had been called, before she was arrested “after a struggle”.

A spokesperson for Tasmania Police told Pulse no serious injuries were reported in the incident.

“[The woman] is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries into the matter,” they said.
