Supermarket-giant Woolworths have announced the closure of nearly 300 in-store butcheries across the country, including four in Tasmania.

The decision will leave hundreds of butchers and meat workers without jobs nationwide and will see around 50 shops remain open in areas of high demand.

The move follows a similar decision by competitor Coles, which closed all of its in-store butcheries in 2021.

Woolworths plans to shift its focus to offering pre-packaged meat to shoppers, and says it will offer redeployment opportunities and support to affected employees.
