A young leopard seal has turned up on a greater Hobart beach this weekend, drawing dozens of curious onlookers keen to catch a glimpse of the city’s newest marine visitor.
The sleepy pup spent much of Sunday napping on the shore, putting on what observers described as a masterclass in rest.
Its arrival comes after the departure of beloved elephant seal Neil, who became a viral icon both locally and globally.
Authorities said the seal’s behaviour was perfectly normal and urged people to keep well back.
“The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania is aware of reports of a young leopard seal coming ashore in southern Tasmania and is monitoring the situation,” a spokesperson said.
The department asked people to stay at least 20 metres away, keep dogs on a leash and at least 50 metres away and ensure the animal always has a clear path back to the water.
“To minimise disturbance, we ask people not to share the seal’s location on social media or other public platforms,” the spokesperson said.
