A young Tasmanian dad has had one of his legs amputated after he was allegedly run down by a car driven by an 18-year-old woman last month.

Brent Cruse, 23, was left seriously injured after he was hit while reportedly stepping out of his vehicle just before the crash in Cressy on November 16.

His aunt, Tanya Cruse, said Brent was “very emotional and in shock” following the ordeal and has since started a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised over $2,600 for the young family.

“Brent’s right leg was [crushed] … and unfortunately they had to amputate below the knee,” Ms Cruse said.

“[He is] having to learn how to navigate around the house with a wheelchair.”

She said Brent returned home over the weekend after spending around two weeks in the Launceston General Hospital and is currently receiving support from family members.

The white Holden Commodore was allegedly driven by Amali De Jonge, 18, who was charged with one count of causing grievous bodily harm the morning after the incident.

Police confirmed at the time that Cruse and De Jonge were known to each other.

De Jonge was granted bail last month in the Launceston Magistrates Court and is scheduled to appear next in the St Helens Magistrates Court on February 7, 2024.
