A blaze that tore through the Mount Field Visitor Centre in the early hours of Saturday morning has caused extensive damage.

Firefighters from four different Tasmania Fire Service stations rushed to the popular national park just before 2:30am to find the blaze had ignited in the kitchen area of the centre.

The fire was swiftly extinguished and later deemed accidental, having been sparked by “combustible materials” left on a bain marie.

The damage bill is estimated to be around $100,000.

The Waterfalls Cafe, which occupies the centre, said its kitchen will be “out of action for a few days” as a result of the blaze.

“But we have coffee and it is fuelling our day right now,” they said.

“Front of House service will continue and the giftshop has been restocked. We will have lots of grab and go lunch options to keep your tummies from rumbling.”

The cafe thanked the firefighters who responded to the blaze, along with the support of the community.
