Queen Mary of Denmark is in Hobart for a private memorial service for her father, John Donaldson.
The Danish Royal House confirmed the visit in its official calendar, which lists the King and Queen attending the service in Hobart today.
Donaldson, a Hobart-based mathematics professor, died in April aged 84.
The Royal House had planned for the family to hold a private memorial service at a later date.
“My heart is heavy and my thoughts are grey. My beloved father has passed away,” Queen Mary said in a statement at the time.
“But I know that when the grief settles, the memories will brighten my day and what will remain strongest is love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”
The Queen last visited her father at the end of March, when the palace said the pair “shared precious time together”.
The visit was made on Queen Mary and King Frederik’s state visit to Australia in March, their first official visit to the country in more than a decade.
The tour took in the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania, with a homecoming stop in Hobart.
John Donaldson was born in Cockenzie and Port Seton, Scotland, in 1941 and graduated in mathematics and physics from the University of Edinburgh in 1963.
He moved to Tasmania later that year and completed a PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Tasmania in 1967.
His youngest daughter, Mary, met then-Crown Prince Frederik in Sydney during the 2000 Olympics and the couple married in 2004.
She became the world’s first Australian-born queen when Frederik took the Danish throne in January 2024.
Queen Mary grew up in Tasmania, attending Taroona High School and Hobart College before graduating from the University of Tasmania.
She has made several private trips home in recent years, including a visit to Salamanca Market in February 2025 and a family wedding in the Coal River Valley in October 2024.
Her sisters, Jane Stephens and Patricia Bailey, live in Tasmania.
Details of the service have not been made public.
