Former governor of Tasmania Kate Warner launched an ambitious vision for Macquarie Point, proposing a $300 million housing development of 1000 new homes for 2000-3000 Tasmanians as an alternative to the State Government’s proposed $750 million stadium.
The proposal includes a Truth and Reconciliation Park and a $100 million Indigenous Cultural Centre. The vision also proposes the relocation of the Antarctic Base to the site, a new State Library, tidal swimming pool, and a light rail transit system.
The vision was unveiled on-site and was attended by Roland Browne, Professor Greg Lehman, Ben Bartl (Tenants’ Union), and Richard Flanagan.
The proposal aims to revitalize the area by incorporating existing businesses and buildings, along with new businesses, making Macquarie Point the hub of a light rail transit system.

The proposed apartment blocks, which would be four to five storeys high, would be made of timber, using state-of-the-art sustainable design.
The buildings would be a mix of public and private, providing affordable housing options for Tasmanians.
One of the significant features of the proposal is the inclusion of a Truth and Reconciliation Park and Indigenous Cultural Centre, highlighting Tasmania’s rich Indigenous history.
The proposed $100 million Indigenous Cultural Centre would be the first of its kind in Australia and would serve as a hub for promoting Indigenous culture and arts.
