Police caught 50 drivers breaking the law during a one-hour traffic operation in the Hobart CBD this morning, a jump from the 40 offences detected in a similar operation just a week earlier.
Southern Road Policing Services found 10 drivers using mobile phones and 40 running yellow or red lights.
Sergeant Andy McShane said the results were concerning.
“Today’s results show too many drivers are still choosing to ignore the rules that are designed to keep everyone safe,” he said.
“These offences create a real risk of serious crashes, particularly at busy city intersections where there are high volumes of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.”
McShane said there is no excuse for using a mobile phone while driving.
“These are deliberate decisions that place other road users at risk,” he said.
“The message from police is simple – put your phone away, pay attention to the road and obey traffic signals every time you get behind the wheel.”
Drivers are required to stop at a yellow traffic light if it is safe to do so before the stop line or intersection.
