A truck has caused around $50,000 in damage after crashing into a bowser at a Huon Valley service station.

Tas Petroleum general manager Nathan Thurlow said the log truck driver pulled into the company’s Grove site on Tuesday morning looking for water, after an engine warning light came on.

He said the driver, who was not a customer, then realised he could not get the truck through.

“It’s a retail site, not a truck stop,” Thurlow told Pulse.

“Backing out, he’s taken out the pump and done about $50,000 worth of damage on his way.”

Thurlow said the site had stayed open, with contractors called in nearly immediately to secure the site and keep the fuel flowing.

He said the trucking company had been “really good” and rang to admit fault.

“They know there’s CCTV everywhere,” he said.

Thurlow said the company had told him they were in the wrong and hoped insurance would cover the damage.

“It’s just an inconvenience,” he said.

He hoped drivers of heavy vehicles would think carefully before pulling into his company’s smaller sites.

“Accidents happen, but be mindful that one’s not a truck stop.”
