The CEO of AFL Tasmania says the massive support shown at Saturday’s state rep games at North Hobart Oval is ‘a sign of what’s to come’ when Tasmania enters the big league in 2028.
“When we come together as Tasmania, we’re a force to be reckoned with,” said CEO Damian Gill.
7,189+ fans walked through the gates of North Hobart Oval on Saturday to watch Tasmania take on Queensland in our first state game since 2016.
Gill says the display of support is ‘solid proof’ of the opportunities that lie ahead if Tasmania unites behind the new team and stadium.
“It was fantastic to see so many in attendance. Over 7000 were there, and that doesn’t include the people that were in before we actually opened the gates – and there was a fair chunk of them. There were a lot of kids, and we sort of struggled to count all of them”.
Sam Siggins, who won the Lefroy Medal for Tasmania’s best on ground after Saturday’s game, said it was a “really special day for Tassie footy”.
“To play in front of a crowd like that was truly amazing,” Siggins told Pulse.
Plans are currently in place for Tasmania’s VFL and VFLW teams to begin in 2025, followed by an AFL team in 2028.
