Plans for a new multi-million-dollar sports hub in Hobart’s Northern Suburbs have been lodged, more than 4 years after first being announced.
The North Chigwell Sports Facility, located next to the Brooker Highway, at the North Chigwell Sport Ground aims to replace the current playing area with a more modern setup.
The proposed changes involve updating the existing clubrooms to modern facilities while also introducing improved lighting, new female-friendly change rooms, a function centre, a spectator stand, more parking, expansive training areas and a brand-new junior field.
In 2021, Football Tasmania CEO Matt Bulkeley said the new facility would be a game changer for the sport, but it was time for construction to start.
“We’re very grateful for the support provided by the Federal Government, and of course to Andrew Wilkie for initially securing the funding over two years ago (in 2019),” Bulkeley said at the time.
“Finding enough playing and training space for our growing number of players is one of our biggest challenges and the new football hub at North Chigwell will greatly help us to address this issue.”
While the exact cost of the facility remains unknown, a federal government grant of $12.8 million was secured back in 2019.
The development is currently open for submissions to the Glenorchy City Council until September 12.
