A $750,000 upgrade is underway at Black River Campground near Stanley on the north-west coast, with new toilets, resurfaced roads and better-defined campsites among the improvements.

The state government is funding the work through its Spirit Preparedness Fund, which helps businesses and councils get ready for increased visitor numbers expected with the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels.

Parks Minister Nick Duigan said the campground was a standout spot on the coast.

“The Black River campground is a hidden jewel on the north-west coast, offering an idyllic beachfront location to set up camp for a few nights,” Duigan said.

“This investment will deliver safety improvements and the visitor experience for all campers, in particular the growing caravan and motorhome visitor market.”

“The roads will be resurfaced, traffic calming measures installed and site drainage improved.”

Two local firms have been brought on to carry out the work.

Marcol Construction will build the new toilets, while Allan Lord Holdings Civil will handle the road upgrades and campsite layout works.

The upgrades are expected to be finished by October 2026, ahead of the camping season.

The campground will stay open during the works, though visitors might face delays getting to some areas.
