Cascade Brewery has launched a mid-strength version of its flagship draught, tapping into growing demand for lower alcohol options across Australia.
The new Cascade Mid-Strength 3.5% is being brewed at the South Hobart site specifically for the Tasmanian market.
Cascade Head of Manufacturing Brendan Flanagan said the brewery spotted an opportunity in shifting consumer habits.
“We’ve seen a trend in consumer demand where customers are looking for no low and mid-strength options in Australia and we thought it was a great opportunity to leverage the Cascade Draught brand and launch the Cascade mid-strength 3.5%,” he said.
Flanagan said the new beer uses the same Australian hops, fermentation process and yeast as the original Cascade Draught.
“Very similar to the original Cascade Draught, very similar hop and malt profile with a crisp and bitter finish on the beer,” he said.
“People want different beers for different occasions and obviously the 3.5% will suit occasions where consumers may not want to consume too much alcohol.”
Former Richmond AFL star Jack Riewoldt, who grew up in Hobart, was on hand for the launch and described the beer in three words as “old but new.”
“It still obviously reminds me of the taste of the OG original green can Cascade Draught,” he said.
Riewoldt said he recently brought friends from the mainland to mountain bike down kunanyi/Mount Wellington, finishing at the brewery.
“This is the perfect spot to have the new Cascade mid-strength,” he said.
“Perfect for quenching a little bit of thirst after what was a chaotic two hours down the mountain, but enjoyable with friends who don’t very often get to have a Cascade because they’re stuck on the other side of Bass Strait.”
The three-time premiership forward said adding a mid-strength option would give more people a chance to enjoy one of Tasmania’s most recognised brands.
