Construction has begun on 18 new social and affordable homes in Tasmania’s north-west.
The development, at Atkins Drive in the Burnie suburb of Romaine, is expected to be finished by mid-2027.
Builder Beardwood started work in late June after winning the contract through Homes Tasmania’s tender process.
The project will deliver 18 two-storey, two-bedroom units, split between social housing and affordable rentals.
Homes Tasmania says the site is close to local services and will help meet strong demand for affordable housing in the region.

The homes are designed to be accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
They will be built to the silver level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines under the National Construction Code, which aims to make homes adaptable for a range of residents.
Each unit will also carry a 7-star energy rating, which Homes Tasmania says will help residents cut heating and cooling costs.
“The Atkins Drive development is part of Homes Tasmania’s ongoing work to deliver more medium-density housing in well-connected locations, making better use of available land while creating modern, affordable homes for Tasmanians,” the agency said.
Burnie City Council approved the development in October 2025.
It is funded by Homes Tasmania and the federal government through the Housing Australia Future Fund.
Once complete, the homes will be managed by one of Tasmania’s community housing providers.
