Tasmania’s newest school, Brighton High School, is now complete and ready to welcome students in 2025.
The state-of-the-art facility, located in the rapidly growing suburb north of Hobart, will accommodate up to 600 students from Years 7 to 12.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the school provides a modern and high-quality learning spaces for students.
“Brighton is a thriving community and this school will cater for the growing number of local students,” he said.
“The Brighton High School is Tasmania’s biggest public education infrastructure project in more than a decade.”
Education Minister Jo Palmer said the project has been in the works for several years.
“It began, as many projects did, six years ago with a $30 million budget that had to be increased in 2021 to $50 million and it’s ended up being a project around that $74 million mark,” she said.
“School builds are no different to any other builds that we’ve seen through COVID and post-COVID, where we really have seen construction blow out.”
“The educational outcomes that will come from these amazing facilities, the beautiful environment that’s been created for our young people in this area … we are always going to prioritise investing in our young people.”
The school features modern facilities, including a multi-purpose hall, performing arts space, gymnasium, commercial kitchen and café, outdoor learning street and technologies space.
Students will begin at the new school in 2025, with Year 7 to Year 11 cohorts starting first.
Principal Megan Bennell earlier this year said the school will have a catchment area that spans a significant portion of the Brighton and Southern Midlands municipality.
Intake areas will include students from feeder primary schools in Brighton, Bagdad and Kempton.
