Third man charged over record $8.5 million Tasmanian meth seizure

A New Norfolk man police allege is an outlaw motorcycle gang member has become the third person charged over what is believed to be Tasmania’s largest single seizure of methamphetamine.

Detectives from the Tasmania Joint Organised Crime Task Force arrested the 33-year-old in Glenorchy on Wednesday.

He has been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and dealing in the proceeds of crime.

Police allege he was involved in bringing a large quantity of methamphetamine, also known as ice, into Tasmania.

Around 17 kilograms of the drug was seized when authorities searched a vehicle in the Burnie area on September 18.

The man appeared in an after-hours sitting of the Hobart Magistrates Court on Wednesday evening and was held in custody.

He faced court again on Thursday and was granted bail. He is due to reappear on February 2 next year.

Two men charged earlier with trafficking over the seizure remain in custody and are due back in court on November 4.

Police said last month the haul was believed to be the largest single seizure of methamphetamine in Tasmania’s history, with an estimated street value of $8.5 million.
