Glenorchy’s Cosgrove High School has officially opened its $24.9 million redevelopment, capping an eight-year journey from election promise to ribbon-cutting.
Education Minister Jo Palmer opened the upgraded campus on Friday, unveiling new learning spaces, performing arts facilities and outdoor areas for students from Years 7 to 12.
The project was first committed to at the 2018 state election.
Community consultation began in 2019 and a master plan was released in 2022.

A fire that destroyed B Block in November 2020 added $2.8 million from the Tasmanian Risk Management Fund to the budget, which had originally sat at $20 million.
Demolition and preparatory works started in late 2023.

Main construction ramped up in July 2024, with builder Vos Construction and Joinery staging works around school terms to limit disruption.
The finished redevelopment includes modern general learning areas, a student hub with a cafe and catering kitchen, drama and music facilities and a new reception and car park.
An accessibility lift, amphitheatre and landscaped outdoor learning spaces have also been delivered.
“When we invest in high-quality, well-designed spaces, we are investing in teaching and learning, as well as the engagement and wellbeing of every student who walks through these doors,” Palmer said.

The Cosgrove upgrade is one of 15 school projects being delivered under a $188 million state-wide infrastructure package.
Other education projects in the Glenorchy area include the new Glenorchy Child and Family Learning Centre and recently completed works at Springfield Gardens Primary School.
A major redevelopment of Rosetta Primary School is also planned under the state government’s 2024 election commitments.
