An electronic message board, typically used for promoting road safety messages, has recently been displaying a message of a different kind after its tyres were reportedly stolen.
The sign, operated by the Circular Head Council, is believed to have been targeted by thieves while it was parked on the Bass Highway near the Stanley turn-off last week.
Deb Mainwaring, Manager of Connected Communities at the Council, told Pulse it was the second time the ‘little yellow trailer’ had been targeted.
“We’ve lost a battery and some solar panels [previously] and we were never able to recover them,” she said.
“Unfortunately it’s just one of those things that someone needed the tyres more than what they thought we did.”
In response to the tyre theft, the council placed the ‘cheeky message’ on the screen pleading for the return of the tyres.
“Can I have my tyres back plz,” the sign, which is propped up by its stilts, reads.
The council has taken action by replacing the stolen tyres at a cost to ratepayers of approximately $700, in addition to installing a new locking system to secure the trailer moving forward.
Tasmania Police confirmed they were aware of the incident and would be making enquiries.
