A manufacturing error has been blamed for an incorrect clearway sign that told drivers they could not stop and park on Bathurst Street between 4am and 6pm.

The mistake went unnoticed during the rollout of a new bike lane on the busy CBD street and only came to light days after the installation process had wrapped up.

The sign installed read 4am instead of 4pm, causing confusion among motorists.

Other signage installed alongside the bike lane displayed the correct times.

Hobart City Council CEO Michael Stretton confirmed to Pulse that ratepayers will not bear the cost of the error.

He said “the supplier will cover the replacement cost” of the sign and apologised “for any confusion caused”.

Following inquiries from Pulse, a piece of tape was applied to the bottom of the ‘A’ in AM, transforming it into a ‘P’ as a temporary fix.

The new bike lane has already been met with mixed reactions from the community, with motorists taking to social media to vent their frustration about the loss of a lane outside of peak hours.

Cyclists, however, have welcomed the changes, saying the separated lanes make them feel safer rising through the city.

Stretton last week told Pulse the bike lane on Bathurst Street is part of a broader trial that also includes installations on Campbell and Argyle streets.
