Devonport is set to become a regional sporting mecca, with the city council unanimously voting to prioritise investment in two key sports infrastructure projects.
The projects, estimated to cost between $40 and $50 million, are set to elevate Devonport’s status and enable the city to host elite-level games.
The first project is a new Devonport Indoor Sports Complex (DISC) catering to the needs of multiple sporting codes, which will be located at the Devonport Oval.
The second project is the $7.5 million Valley Road Soccer Complex Development, which will allow Valley Road to host elite-level soccer games.
The Devonport City Council has already secured a $25 million federal Labor grant towards the 15-year Devonport Sports Infrastructure Master Plan (SIMP) projects, but still needs a major state funding injection to meet the estimated $15 million to $25 million shortfall for the DISC project.
They say the aim of the DISC project is to deliver “high-ball” stadium facilities with a show court and seating for 2500, positioning the venue as the region’s pre-eminent sports venue.
Mayor Alison Jarman stated that both projects were important for Devonport and they were trying to make both projects happen.
The council has scheduled a meeting with Premier Jeremy Rockliff to lead a united bid to lock in the extra funds required to complete the projects.
