One of the North-West Coast’s most loved fishing spots is on the brink of being lost forever.
Frombergs Dam, located on private land at Ulverstone, has long been a hotspot for trout fishers, especially for young members of the Coastal Junior Anglers Club.
However, plans to redevelop the site into a residential subdivision may soon put an end to Trout traditions at the dam.
Inland Fisheries has stocked Frombergs Dam with hundreds of rainbow trout over the last 7 years, providing ‘countless’ opportunities for young anglers to catch their first fish.
Despite its popularity, the new owner of the land – located at 2 Waverley Road in Ulverstone, has intentions to drain the dam and fill it in, making way for a 17-lot residential development.
A report, set to be presented at the Central Coast Council’s monthly meeting this Monday, recommends approving the development application.
Although the proposal has faced opposition – with several submissions received against it, the report claims that the plan is in compliance with the Central Coast Council’s planning scheme.
Local fishers, both young and old, say they are disappointed at the idea of losing their spot – arguing the dam is not only a place for recreational fishing but is an essential learning ground for aspiring young anglers.
