A 60-year-old man from Red Hills in Tasmania’s north has been charged with several driving offences after narrowly avoiding hitting a child at a pedestrian crossing in early February after he allegedly ran a red light.
While the child escaped unscathed, the incident was witnessed by several people who reported it to police, leading to the driver being ‘quickly identified’.

Police say the ‘reckless’ driver is now facing charges and remind drivers to remain vigilant and aware of pedestrians at all times, especially near schools.
Police school zone road safety tips:
- Slow down to 40km/h or less in school zones and within 50m of a school bus with flashing lights
- Drive with due care and attention, be alert for children and stop for people at crossings
- Wherever possible pedestrians should cross at designated crossings
- Supervise young children while they wait at bus stops or crossroads
- Obey parking laws around school zones
