Tasmania Police have detected 15 drug drivers from 72 oral fluid tests over the first two days of Operation Safe Arrival.

The tests were conducted over two days from Thursday, with those 15 drivers allegedly returning positive results for illicit substances.

Police said the results reinforced “the ongoing dangers associated with driving while affected by drugs and the role our officers play in removing these risks from the road”.

More than 4,000 random breath tests were also carried out, with nine drivers allegedly detected driving under the influence of alcohol.

The nine drink-drivers “chose to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, putting not only themselves at risk, but other road users as well,” police said.

Speeding remained the most common offence, with 280 drivers detected exceeding the posted limit.

Police said almost half of those were travelling between 15km/h and 29km/h over the speed limit.

“Speeding continues to be one of the most prevalent and dangerous behaviours,” police said.
