A tourist who told police she was “rushing to catch a flight home” has been disqualified from driving after being caught travelling at 159km/h on the Midland Highway.
The 51-year-old New South Wales woman was driving a rented Ford Ranger near Perth around 3pm on Saturday when a police motorcyclist detected her speed.
The speed limit on that stretch of highway is 110km/h.
She was intercepted and fined $1,224.75, handed six demerit points and disqualified from driving for four months.
Tasmania Police said in a social media post there was “no excuse for excess speed”.
“Speeding is never worth the risk to yourself or others on our roads,” police said.
Police warned losing a licence and receiving a fine were not the only possible penalties for speeding.
Officers can also clamp or confiscate vehicles detected travelling 45km/h or more over the speed limit.
