Residents of the New Norfolk Caravan Park have been forced to evacuate as the nearby River Derwent threatens to inundate the area.
The river was nearing the minor flood level of 2 metres at 10pm on Friday, according to Bureau of Meteorology data.
The Bureau warns that additional moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over the next few days, which could cause flooding in some areas.
“Further strong cold fronts are forecast over the next few days and into next week, with moderate to heavy rainfall forecast,” the BOM warns.
“Multiple flood peaks are likely with forecast rain.”
Mayor Michelle Dracoulis thanked council staff and SES volunteers for assisting with the evacuations.
“Please do not approach these areas as you will hinder operations,” she told locals.
An evacuation centre has been setup at the Derwent Valley Sports and Recreation Centre at 50 Derwent Terrace.
The State Emergency Service say people in the warning areas across Tasmania should prepare their properties and monitor conditions.
“Flooding is likely in streams and rivers. Lives could be at risk from flood waters. Some properties may become isolated or inundated by flood waters,” authorities warn.
“If conditions worsen and safe to do so, leave and go to the home of a family member or friend who is in a safe location away from the flood affected area.”
