At least 16 power poles have been destroyed by bushfires on the West Coast, leaving approximately 70 customers in the region without electricity.

A helicopter assessment undertaken on Saturday revealed significant damage to the local distribution network, primarily affecting residents in Tullah and Granville Harbour.

“Our first priority is safe access,” a spokesperson for TasNetworks said.

“Once our crews can safely access the area, there will be a big restoration effort ahead.”

Excavation work will be necessary before the damaged poles can be replaced, the spokesperson said.

A timeframe for power restoration is currently unknown and will only become clearer once crews are on the ground.

“Customers need to prepare for an extended power outage, at least over the weekend,” the spokesperson said.

Over 93,000 hectares of West Coast wilderness has been lost since the fires began earlier this month.
