From next week, more ferry services will run between the Hobart waterfront and eastern shore to get people across the River Derwent.
Starting on Wednesday, there will be two extra ferries running from Bellerive to Hobart on weekdays at 10:10am and 10:50am, in addition to the current eight daily sailings.
Additional weekday services will also depart Hobart at 9:50am, 10:30am, 2:15pm and 3:15pm.
On Saturdays, only the existing seven return services will operate and there will be no Sunday services.
Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the council will pay $50,000 to subside the 60 additional services over 10 weekdays to Christmas Eve.
“These extra ferry services will not only provide a stress-free option for commuters but also bring more potential shoppers into the heart of our city during this vital time for businesses,” she said.
Alongside the weekday ferries, a Park and Ride shuttle bus from the Regatta Grounds car park will operate from Monday to Christmas Eve.
The shuttle bus will run a continuous loop from the car park to stops on Murray Street and Morrison Street on the waterfront.
The service will operate Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 5:30pm with buses departing every 15 minutes and will resume after Christmas during the Taste of Summer festival.
“We’re excited to offer extra ferry services and the return of the popular Park and Ride Shuttle Bus to make it easier for everyone to enjoy the magic of Hobart at Christmas,” Reynolds said.
“These initiatives are about easing the pressure of Christmas shopping while reducing traffic congestion and making Hobart a vibrant and accessible destination for everyone.”
