A Blackmans Bay family is asking for help to cover basic living costs after Shannon Nagle died in a single-vehicle crash while his partner has been recovering from breast cancer.
Nagle was driving his son to school when the crash occurred on Burwood Drive in Blackmans Bay on June 29, with the car striking multiple power poles and bringing down powerlines across several homes.
His 10-year-old son survived with broken bones and other injuries.
He has since recovered and is adjusting to life without his dad.
The crash is being investigated by the coroner, with a possible medical episode among the circumstances being examined.
Bec Taylor, the sister of Nagle’s partner Jenn, said her sister was recovering herself from breast cancer treatment and was now facing the family’s living expenses alone.
“My sister has not been able to go back to work yet and now has to pay the rent and all the living expenses by herself,” Taylor told Pulse.
Taylor said her sister had been receiving treatment for breast cancer for the past year and had only recently returned to work as a contract employee.
A GoFundMe page set up by the family described Nagle as someone who “always looked out for others and never hesitated to lend a hand.”
A proud Maritime Union of Australia member, Nagle worked at sea and was also a motocross enthusiast and former naval seaman.
“If you knew Shannon, you’ll know he was always the first to step up when someone else needed a hand,” the page said.
“Now it’s our turn to do the same for the people he loved.”
Taylor said the family may not receive any financial support for up to a year or more while the coroner’s investigation continued and her sister was unlikely to return to work for at least another eight to 12 weeks.
Nagle was deeply involved in the local school community, the soccer team and took an active role in school life.
Taylor said his death had been devastating for his son and other children at the school.
“The only miracle in all of this is that his son is alive,” she said.
