A woman has died as a result of a serious crash between three vehicles on Tasmania’s east coast on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash on the Tasman Highway, less than 2km from the St Helens township, was reported to emergency services around 3:30pm.

Police said the 62-year-old from Pyengana passed away while receiving treatment after being rushed to St Helens District Hospital.

A 61-year-old man, also from Pyengana and a passenger in the same vehicle, was initially taken to St Helens District Hospital before being transferred to Launceston General Hospital for further treatment.

Police say his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved were also taken to St Helens District Hospital.

A 28-year-old St Helens man sustained minor injuries, while a 43-year-old Sandy Bay man was unharmed.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

The Tasman Highway remains closed in both directions and police are asking motorists to avoid the area while the scene is cleared.
