Four Tasmanian footballers have been named in the 2026 Marsh AFL National Futures squads, with two set to play on the MCG before this year’s Grand Final.
Jake Beams from Glenorchy and Benji Russell from Lauderdale will represent Tasmania in the boys match at the MCG on September 26, playing as a curtain-raiser to the Grand Final.
Matilda Lange and Imogen Verdouw both from Kingborough Lions earned spots in the girls squad, with their match to be played at Windy Hill on September 12 alongside the AFLW Round 5 clash between Richmond and St Kilda.
Each of the squads will take part in a two-day program in Melbourne which will be highlighted by a talent showcase match.
Tasmania’s under-18 boys state development coach Scott Moore has been named head coach of the boys squad.
Moore said the program is about showcasing the best young talent ahead of next year’s drafts.
“It’s about getting the best of the best together and showcasing what’s coming through for next year in particular,” he said.
Moore said Tasmania’s development pathway is closely aligned with the incoming Devils AFL club, with all efforts focused on preparing young Tasmanians for the new team.
“All of our thought process into particularly the 17-year-olds, 16-year-olds is gearing them up to be Tassie footy club representatives, because they get first crack at them,” he said.
Russell said the opportunity was a dream come true.
“You dream about playing at the MCG, it’s something that every kid dreams of,” he said.
He said landing on a Tasmanian list was the top priority for next year.
“The main target is to be on a Tasmanian list, you wanna play for your home state,” Russell said.
Beams said his father, former Melbourne Football Club midfielder Ben Beam, told him to soak it all in.
“He said once you get out there it’ll be unreal just looking around the stands, almost feeling like they’re falling on top of you,” Beams said.
All selected players are born in 2009 and eligible for the 2027 AFL and AFLW drafts.
