Get Greek, the popular food truck that has spent 17 months popping up at events across southern Tasmania, is putting down roots at a permanent home at The Old Shipyard in Derwent Park.
Owner Mihali Karagiannis said the venue, located near Brewlab, will span three levels with indoor dining, a large back deck and a courtyard where the truck is already set up serving customers from the car park.
Shipping containers are being converted into kitchens to give the space a food truck park feel and wood-fired pizza will join the Greek menu down the track.
“It’s just a home away from home, like one big home I call it and it’s just a place where everyone can just feel comfortable,” Karagiannis told Pulse.

“It’s family-friendly, kid-friendly, dog-friendly.”
The building sits on the site of a former shipyard.

Karagiannis said he is keeping the industrial history and theme while turning the front of the site into “one big Greek village.”
The venue is aiming to open fully by the end of September, but the food truck is already operating from the courtyard six nights and five lunches a week.
A weekly schedule is posted on Facebook and the Get Greek website each Sunday.
The truck has previously built up a cult following, having travelled from Huonville to Sorell and New Town, covering private catering, weddings and corporate functions.

Once the permanent kitchen is running, the truck will still head out for catering bookings while shipyard restaurant stays open.
The venue will also be licensed and Karagiannis said it could host weddings, engagement parties, birthdays and other events.
He said the move from truck to bricks and mortar came down to a simple motivation.
“It comes back to the passion of cooking,” he said.

“I can’t have everyone at my place, so this is our place for everyone that we’re creating.”
