Entries are now open for the Henry Jones Art Prize, offering Tasmanian artists a share of $40,000 in prize money.
The annual competition is run by the Henry Jones Art Hotel and is open to artists in the early stages of their career.
Prize money is split across two categories – painting and mixed media – with the winner of each taking home $20,000.
A $1,000 People’s Choice award, sponsored by Artery Hobart and a $750 Packing Room Prize will also be handed out for highly commended work.
The competition is free to enter and open to Tasmanian residents aged 18 and over who are within the first five years of their artistic practice.
Lisa Moroney, art curator at the Henry Jones Art Hotel, said the prize continues to attract strong talent.
“Each year, we’re continually inspired by the calibre and diversity of artists who enter The Henry Jones Art Prize,” she said.
“Past winners have demonstrated not only exceptional technical skill, but a unique ability to tell compelling stories and connect with audiences through their work.”
Moroney said the competition offers emerging artists a chance to gain recognition beyond the prize money itself.
“The prize provides a wonderful platform for early career artists, offering valuable exposure and the opportunity to have their work seen by industry professionals, collectors and the broader community,” she said.
“We’re excited to see the breadth of entries this year.”
The prize was established in 2018 and has grown into one of Tasmania’s leading art awards.
The Henry Jones Art Hotel is Australia’s first art hotel and operates as a gallery, hosting regular exhibitions, daily art and history tours and an artist-in-residence program.
It is also the primary sponsor of the John Glover Art Prize, Australia’s most prestigious landscape art award.
