Burnie product Taran Armstrong has made history as the first born and bred Tasmanian to sign as a rostered player with the Tasmania JackJumpers.

The 24-year-old point guard has penned a one-year deal with an option for a second season.

Armstrong is widely considered one of Australia’s greatest emerging talents and was the first Tasmanian to sign with an NBA side.

He signed with the Golden State Warriors in 2025, but didn’t play a game at the top level.

General manager Darren Smith called the signing a monumental moment for the club

He returned home to Burnie earlier this year after playing for Dubai Basketball.

“When I was reflecting on what I needed next in my career I knew I wanted to go to a place where I could be the best version of myself, and that’s here with the JackJumpers,” Armstrong said.

“I really believe in my ability, but I’m far from a finished product and that’s what I’m excited for – the JackJumpers are nationally renowned for their player development.”

“To have all the pieces fall into place and to be able to play for my home state is such a blessing.”

“I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like playing in front of my home crowd, with familiar faces watching, but I know that I can’t wait for it.”

The JackJumpers’ General Manager of Basketball Operations Darren Smith said it was a monumental moment for both Armstrong and the club, with both aspiring to this since the team’s inception five years ago.

“We not only have home-grown-talent on the court, but also one of the most exciting Australians in the league right now too,” Smith said.

“Taran is really crafty with the ball, he’s unpredictable, we’ve never seen a point guard quite like him.”

“He’s really one of the most exciting signatures the JackJumpers have ever had.”

Head Coach Scott Roth said Armstrong would have an enormous impact on Tasmania.

Head coach Scott Roth said Armstrong was exactly what the JackJumpers were about

“Armstrong is exactly what the JackJumpers are all about, the grit and grind and defending the island,” Roth said.

“We’ve obviously followed him for many years, and have been hopeful that at some point he would want to come back and play for us.”

“Now, the timing is right, the impact he’s going to have on our team and state is incredible – Taran will show Tassie kids what’s possible.”
