Big Bash cricket is heading back to northern Tasmania, with the Hobart Hurricanes locking in a Launceston return as part of their BBL16 campaign against the Adelaide Strikers at UTAS Stadium.

Cricket Tasmania chief executive Dominic Baker said the schedule would give fans across the state a chance to experience Big Bash cricket.

“The Hurricanes are an important part of the Tasmanian summer and we look to replicate the Hurricanes experience across Tasmania with four home matches at Ninja Stadium and our return to Launceston for BBL16,” Baker said.

The January 9 clash will be the Hurricanes’ first game in the north since the 2023–24 season.

The venue had been a Big Bash regular, with the three-year gap in part due to renovations at UTAS Stadium, where capacity is being expanded to around 12,500 in time for the match.

Baker said the average crowd at Ninja Stadium was 10,000 and expected the north could beat that.

The Tasmanian side will play 10 regular season matches in BBL16, including four home games at Ninja Stadium in Hobart.

The Hurricanes open their campaign on December 17 with a home clash against the Brisbane Heat at Bellerive, before a festive stretch that takes in games against the Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars.

The Hurricanes claimed their maiden Big Bash League title in 2024–25, defeating the Sydney Thunder in the final, before falling to the Sydney Sixers in last season’s finals.

Memberships covering all home WBBL and BBL matches start from $38 and are available now, with general tickets to go on sale later in the year.
