A new housing complex for Launceston General Hospital staff is set to be built in Punchbowl, providing accommodation for essential workers in the north.

The state government has acquired the land to the south east of the city for the 24-unit development, which will be offered at affordable rent prices.

Minister for Housing and Planning Felix Ellis said the project is the first of several initiatives under the government’s Key Worker Accommodation program.

“Our key workers, such as the Launceston General Hospital staff who will be utilising this accommodation, are the backbone of our communities,” he said.

“This key worker accommodation will increase the supply of affordable rentals to people who provide essential services to our cities and towns.”

The project will free up other rental properties in the area that were previously occupied by hospital staff, increasing the overall housing stock available.
