Terri Irwin is backing a campaign that is pushing for the speed limit on a North-West Tasmania road to be changed in a bid to save the endangered Tasmanian Devil.
The wildlife conservationist has written a letter of support to the local council, urging them to make the “correct decision” to “support the recovery of this important species” and lower the limit on Woolnorth Road from 100km/h to 80km/h after a quashed attempt at a recent meeting.
In her letter, Terri says the North-west area is significant to the protection of the endangered Tasmanian devils which are ‘critically important apex predators’ in Tasmania.
“Currently, this species is suffering from a facial tumour disease which has caused their dramatic decline. The Cape Grim region is one of the last strongholds for a healthy devil population.”
“I have been personally involved in an endangered species breeding program for decades at Australia Zoo to help ensure the future of this species.”
“Over the past three decades, and along with my husband, Steve, we have filmed documentaries about Tassie devils, and funded research work to better understand how to defeat this disease.”
“As an apex predator, the devil has a trophic cascade effect on every other species in Tasmania.”
“Something as simple as reducing the speed limit would significantly support the recovery of this important species.”
As a frequent visitor to Tasmania, Terri added that she appreciates and even admires lower speed limits across the State that are there to protect wildlife.
“The last time I drove Woolnorth Road with my family (December 2020) we not only saw a Tassie devil, we were able to film it, making it the most memorable part of our holiday.”
“I will be very proud to support and promote a positive outcome with this proposal, and look forward to the leaders of Circular Head Council making the correct decision.”
The council will vote on the changes at a meeting on Thursday.
