Expedia’s bookings data showed Launceston offers strong value for money during winter, with its food and dining scene, slower pace and natural surroundings.

Tasmanian Tourism, Hospitality and Events Minister Jane Howlett said the result is a win for Launceston and the state’s north.

“Launceston has so much to offer visitors during winter, from great food and wine, historic charm and a strong events calendar,” she said.

“This recognition confirms Launceston is truly punching above its weight as a destination during the off season.”

Howlett said the listing puts the region in front of a huge audience of potential visitors.

“Having Launceston featured in Expedia’s top 10 winter destinations puts northern Tasmania in front of millions of travellers who are actively planning their next trip, which is great news for local tourism and hospitality businesses,” she said.

“This announcement comes off the back of Bicheno being named the Best Town in Australia on Tuesday. Tassie has what the nation wants.”

Byron Bay in New South Wales topped the list, followed by Apollo Bay in Victoria and Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

Margaret River in Western Australia and Coffs Harbour in New South Wales rounded out the top five.

Launceston was the only Tasmanian destination to make the cut, with the remaining spots going to Sorrento in Victoria, Burleigh Heads in Queensland, Sydney and Marcoola in Queensland.
