A border collie is recovering from surgery after being found with a rubber band tied tightly around his testicles in Tasmania’s south.

The dog, now named Sampson, was taken to a vet in Huonville by a member of the public.

RSPCA Tasmania says he underwent surgery on Wednesday and is expected to make a full recovery.

The organisation is appealing for information about who is responsible.

“RSPCA inspectors are calling on any member of the public who knows this dog’s owner or the person who did this to this border collie to come forward,” the organisation said in a statement.

Sampson was wearing a light blue collar when he was handed in.

The RSPCA says he is doing well despite what he has been through.

“In spite of the circumstances Sampson is doing very well and displaying the traits of a sociable dog,” the organisation said.

Inspectors say the act is a criminal one.

“No animal should be treated this way. It is unlawful behaviour for a reason,” the RSPCA said.

Under the Tasmanian Animal Welfare Act 1993, a person found guilty of aggravated cruelty faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine of 200 penalty units – currently $41,000 – or both.

The RSPCA says Sampson will be rehabilitated and rehomed once he has recovered.
