Libraries across Tasmania will pause at midday on Wednesday to read the same story at the same time, joining a national push to get kids excited about books.
The event is National Simultaneous Storytime, run each year by the Australian Library and Information Association.
This year’s book is Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, a picture book about a rookie kangaroo captain who leads her team through a nail-biting football match against opponents including a spider goalkeeper and snakes in attack.
The story is written by football veterans Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd and illustrated by Jake A. Minton.

Libraries Tasmania is backing the initiative, with reading sessions planned at libraries around the state.
Simon Jones, director of the Library Network at Libraries Tasmania, said the event was a chance to spotlight the value of reading.

“National Simultaneous Storytime is a wonderful celebration of reading. It’s an opportunity to share stories that inspire young people and highlight the power of literacy across our communities,” Jones said.
Children and families are invited to watch the story read live via a national livestream by ALIA staff.
A lineup of guest readers will also bring the book to life at local events, including broadcaster Leon Compton, former media personality Peter Gee, wildlife advocate Greg Irons, Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People Ros Cornish, local mayors, sporting personalities and library staff.
The story’s themes of resilience, courage and determination are designed to give young readers a confidence boost and encourage them to embrace their strengths.

Families can check with their local library for details on what’s happening in their area.
