‘Loud bang’ heard before pole fire cut power to 1,400 in Kings Meadows

Over 1,400 homes and businesses in Launceston are without power

Updated 5pm, Thursday November 26: TasNetworks has now reduced the number of affected customers to about 1,000.

“We have three crews in the area working to detect the fault and restore power as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson said.

“They’re also fixing some burned loops.”

“The fault caused wires to fall on the corner of Riseley and Guy Streets.  Some other assets in Guy Street and Fawkner Avenue then threw some sparks.”

The spokesperson said there were no pole fires as earlier believed, but confirmed sparks were thrown.

Earlier: Over 1,400 homes and businesses in Launceston’s south have been left without power this afternoon following a reported pole fire.

The outage is impacting customers in Kings Meadows, Norwood, Prospect and Youngtown, including Kings Meadows High School.

TasNetworks crews are investigating the incident on Fawkner Avenue.

“We’ll restore power as soon as possible,” they said.

“Please stay at least 10 metres clear of any fallen power-lines or other damage and report it to TasNetworks on 132 004.”

Locals reported hearing a loud bang before the power cut and say some traffic lights along Hobart Road have also been knocked out.

The Tasmania Fire Service is on the scene.
