Man arrested and charged after police helicopter search in Derwent Valley

A man wanted after a police helicopter search in the Derwent Valley has been arrested and charged, along with three others.

Tasmania Police arrested the 29-year-old from Blackmans Bay in South Hobart on Wednesday.

He had been sought since Monday, when an allegedly stolen car was found abandoned at Uxbridge, west of New Norfolk.

Police say the charges include firearms and drug offences, two counts of burglary and three counts of aggravated burglary.

He was also charged with three counts of motor vehicle stealing, seven counts of stealing, three counts of evading police and seven counts of driving without a licence.

He was detained in custody. He will appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Officers began tracking the car around 11:15am on Monday, when it was believed to be near Lonnavale in the Huon Valley.

It was seen heading towards Mount Lloyd at 11:55am. The car was found a short time later at Uxbridge.

Police said the driver fled on foot. A helicopter was deployed to search the area.

Officers urged the public not to approach the man and believed he may have been trying to hitchhike on Plenty Valley Road.

Three other people have also been arrested and charged as part of the ongoing investigation.

A 39-year-old Swansea man was charged with two counts of motor vehicle stealing and two counts of driving while disqualified.

He was also charged with one count of stealing and resisting a police officer.

A 25-year-old Geeveston woman was charged with one count of motor vehicle stealing.

A 25-year-old Blackmans Bay woman was also charged with one count of motor vehicle stealing.

All three will appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court in October.
