Man caused Devonport gas leak after stealing gas meter, say police

Police are on the hunt for a man they say caused a gas leak after stealing a gas meter in Devonport this morning.

Security footage captured the alleged offender lurking around the William Street address in Devonport just before 5am on Tuesday.

He remains unidentified.

Authorities believe the man damaged the business around 5:30am, shortly before emergency services responded to reports of a gas leak.

Firefighters promptly contained the leak and secured the scene before anyone was injured.

“Police would like to hear from anyone with information about the incident, or the person responsible,” a spokesperson said.
