A 32-year-old man has been charged with armed robbery after allegedly threatening a service station employee with a crowbar and stealing cash in New Town on Tuesday morning.
Police allege the man, who is known to them, entered the Ampol Service Station on Risdon Road around 5:50am carrying a crowbar and demanded cigarettes.
A store employee was able to safely flee the premises and was not physically harmed.
The man then allegedly forced open the store cash drawer, took the cash inside and left on foot.
Police tracked him down a short time later at Cornelian Bay, where he was taken into custody.
The stolen property was recovered and detectives from the South East Criminal Investigation Branch carried out an investigation.
The New Town man was charged with armed robbery and a separate stealing offence.
He appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was refused bail.
