A man has been seriously injured after plummeting around 15 metres down the side of a cliff on Bruny Island.

Police, search and rescue crews and a medical team were called to East Cloudy Head on the southern part of the island on Saturday afternoon following reports that the man had fallen.

While the man was able to be extracted from the cliff using ropes, bad weather conditions prevented a helicopter from safely hoisting him to safety.

Instead, a medical team were airlifted to the scene to stabilise the patient before he could be safely extracted around four hours later.

The climber, who is in his 30s, has now been transported to a Melbourne hospital and is in a serious condition.
