Graffiti is making the Kingborough area look like the “slums”, locals say, as the council looks to identify the people responsible for the vandalism.
An under-construction building in Kingston, the first sight for motorists entering the town centre from the Southern Outlet, was covered with large words “ANGRY” and “BORED” over the Easter long weekend.
“It is getting ridiculous,” one local said, while another added “Totally out of control. It’s disgusting the amount of it. Everywhere you look. It is starting to look like the slums.”
Mayor Paula Wriedt, speaking at a council meeting on Wednesday night, said the graffiti was “very frustrating” and “not something that’s easy for us to prevent … as a council”.
“It’s my understanding from some chatter on social media that that particular … message they write on that wall is one that is done in places all around Tasmania,” she said.
“It seems to be a group of young people who travel from place to place leaving that particular message.”
She hoped discussions could be had with Tasmania Police about potential action that could be taken against the offenders, with the CBD’s extensive CCTV network in the area possibly catching them on camera.
“I certainly would encourage property owners where they have had graffiti take place to try and take steps to remove it because otherwise it just, the longer it stays there the more it encourages other people to do copycat things,” Wriedt said.
