Meander Valley Council to fill vacancy after Michael Kelly’s resignation

Michael Kelly, a Meander Valley Councillor and former Deputy Mayor for the past 13 years, has announced his resignation.

Kelly, who served as deputy for eight years, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside fellow councillors and advocate for the community’s future.

“It’s been an immense privilege to serve the people of Meander Valley,” he said.

“As my time on council comes to an end, I’m excited to continue serving our community as a friend and neighbour.”

Mayor Wayne Johnston thanked Kelly for his “invaluable” contributions, acknowledging the impact of his leadership and passion.

“His leadership and passion for Meander Valley have made a lasting impact. We will miss his insights and knowledge,” Johnston said.

Current Deputy Mayor Stephanie Cameron called Kelly “one of the best”.

“A kind bloke, good at jokes and passionate about his patch. Always willing to make hard decisions and a great mentor for me over the years,” she said.

“He’s been by my side the entire time and I’m going to miss him very much.”

A recount of votes from the October 2022 election will be held by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission to fill the vacant seat.
