Mystery posters for unusual milk-drinking event draws crowd to Franklin Square

A large crowd gathered at Franklin Square in Hobart for the milk-drinking event on Saturday

Vaguer posters inviting Hobart residents to watch a group “drink 3 gallons of milk” have drawn hundreds of people to Franklin Square over the weekend.

The flyers, which included a map showing Franklin Square, had been put up around the city in the lead-up to Saturday’s unusual event.

Organiser Heath Harris said he came up with the idea of the milk-drinking event with a friend while they were “pretty bored in science” during the second last week of term at school.

His friend made the poster in a Word document, while Harris found somewhere to hold the event.

Harris said the choice of milk had “nothing behind it”.

“It was just spur of the moment, really,” he told Pulse.

The plan started as “a bit of a joke”, he said, but that changed within 20 minutes, after the pair had printed around 50 posters.

Two videos they posted online generated 10,000-20,000 views, leading to hope the event would be a success.

“We knew people were gonna show up”.

By his estimate, 200-300 people came along on Saturday and around 10 gallons of milk was drunk in total.

Many in the crowd brought their own bottles of milk and Harris said he signed some of them.

“Loads of comments on the posts, like ‘best event I’ve been to all year’,” he said.

“I think they loved it.”

He said he hopes to host another similar event next year.
