The new Spirit of Tasmania ships will feature 45 climate-controlled kennels, 18 pet-friendly cabins and an outdoor deck for animals, giving passengers more options to travel with their pets across Bass Strait.

The pet cabins allow dogs and cats to travel in the room with their owners, while the kennels sit in a dedicated area away from vehicles with CCTV monitoring and routine welfare checks.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the upgraded facilities would appeal to pet owners planning holidays in Tasmania.

“Our furry friends are part of the family and these days, many of us want them to join us on our holidays,” he said.

Rockliff said the expanded offerings would help draw more visitors to Tasmania.
“Our new Spirits have the capacity to bring tens of thousands of extra passengers to our shores every single year,” he said.

The kennels come in various sizes to suit different breeds, with a limit of one pet per kennel unless a mother is travelling with dependent offspring.

Pet cabins allow a maximum of two animals per room, with breed restrictions in place.

The cabins are suited to pets that are calm, well-controlled and comfortable in new environments.
